Her experience and platform from winning the “Face of Kurvacious” inspired her to establish Not My Eyes Inc., an organization dedicated to promoting inclusivity in the fashion world. Annalee’s influence also led to the creation of the “Ms. Kapable Kurves” competition, further demonstrating her commitment to breaking down barriers and empowering individuals with visual impairments.
From Barbados to Long Island: A Journey of Strength and Scholarship
Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, West Indies, Annalee Bowen Smith embarked on a transformative journey that brought her to the United States of America in 1989. Settling in Long Island’s Uniondale district, she pursued her education at Hempstead High School, eventually graduating and advancing her studies. Driven by determination, Annalee attended Long Island University in Brooklyn, where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy, with a remarkable GPA of 3.7. However, her path took an unexpected turn as she faced visual impairment while in college. This stopped her from pursuing a job right away in her field, but despite the challenge, Annalee’s spirit remained strong. Soon Annalee was receiving services through an agency for rehabilitation, Helen Keller Services for the Blind. Within a year, she gained employment as a Production Assistant in the Braille Library. Her role was to edit and produce Braille and large print books, catering to the educational needs of blind and visually impaired students.

Annalee’s journey isn’t confined to her visual impairment; it’s defined by her determination to inspire and uplift others. As an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Hempstead, she consistently contributes to her community and supports various charities. Through her accomplishments, Annalee stands as a beacon of empowerment for individuals with disabilities, proving that there are no limitations to what one can achieve.
