Horace Smith: Assistive Technology Director & Pioneering Advocate
Horace Smith is an Assistive Technology Director with more than 27 years of experience training blind and visually impaired individuals in digital literacy, adaptive software, and independent‑living technology. A graduate of Medgar Evers College with a B.S. in Computer Science, Horace transformed his own experience with vision loss into a lifelong commitment to accessibility and empowerment.
He spent over 13 years with Helen Keller Services for the Blind, partnered with the New York State Commission for the Blind, and later became a private consultant and state vendor, helping hundreds of students gain confidence and independence through technology.Horace’s impact extends internationally—most notably in Barbados, where he upgraded outdated computer systems for the Barbados Association for the Blind and Deaf, dramatically improving their access to modern tools and training.
Known for his expertise, leadership, and dedication to service, Horace is recognized as an extraordinary VIP whose work continues to expand opportunity and independence for the blind community.
